Anishka and Gaurav met at Western University in 2008, but the pair didn’t start dating until four years after their original meeting. In their final year, they bumped into each other at a bar and started to build a friendship over the next six-months that turned to romance. They have been very much in love since, and Gaurav proposed during a romantic holiday in Cancun, Mexico in December of 2011.
On June 1, 2012, Anishka and Gaurav’s families came together to celebrate their wedding on the intimate and beautiful island of Anguilla, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It lies east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint Martin. Conde Naste describes, “Anguilla is small scale and exclusive: glamour without the glitz, St. Bart’s without the paparazzi” — the perfect setting to pamper and inspire 300 family and friends with style, comfort, and glorious nature. Elevated, culturally enriched, extraordinary, unforgettable: these are the words that come to mind.
We were commissioned to design an electronic save-the-date, which lead guests to a completely custom wedding website that we also designed. The website accommodated the massive amount of information caused by complex travel logistics, and allowed the invitation to be clean and succinct. Thus for this wedding, the invitation was truly an announcement and prized keepsake.
Both Anishka and Gaurav’s parents wanted to ensure that the invitation was unique and memorable, as from personal experience, they know — too well, they concurred — that the invitation sets the tone and starts the party! As Gaurav’s mom expressed, “Bad card, bad wedding. Good card, good wedding. This is definitely a spectacular wedding.”
Taking cue, we translated the experience of the Viceroy, their story of love, and desire for cultural flair into one inspiring boxed suite that was eventually sent to 300 different addresses around the world, from India to Hong Kong to Australia, the United States to England and as far as Tanzania. The design was meaningful and had substance & permanence.
The invitation was adorned in a paper sleeve, which had a beautiful pearlized gold sheen and an embellished Ganesh symbol with a concise circular border in the centre.
As guests pulled the box from within the sleeve, the main box is revealed, debossed with a beautiful Mendhi pattern in gold on a gunmetal grey pearlized paper, which referenced the stone and sunbeams of the Isle. The ornate pattern radiated like the sun and also like a ripple of the ocean, all stemming from the Om symbol. From the very first glimpse of the sleeve, and then the box top, it was like the centre of the square design was the centre of gravity — this repeated itself inside the box, where a folio sat inside with a love poem pressed in gold onto teal in the very centre. Surrounded by a gold pressed border, the poem sat grandly in its setting of another debossed square, showing utmost crafstmanship. Inside the hardcover folio, the main wording was pressed in gold onto a luxurious piece of 220lb Cotton stock in a crisp, contemporary font. The edge and border of the cotton paper was hand painted in a gold leaf, before being mounted onto a teal matting. To the left, a re-interpretation of Anishka’s mom’s artwork was printed in tone-on-tone teal, and enlarged to a dynamic sculptural scale. Lastly, but certainly not least, a gunmetal coloured enveloped sat under the invitation with wedding details. Inside, a simple bi-folded card was adorned by the Mendhi pattern in matte gold, and opened to a poignant letter of love from the parents. The sand and sun, the prestige of the venue, the grandness of the Indian culture, and passion for life — this was all captured in a lovely hand-crafted suite that guests still talk about today.
From invitations to signage, menus, programs, and placecards, our stationery definitely represented all the elements of Anishka & Gaurav’s legendary party. Paired with the works of some of the bests in the world in décor, food, photography and planning, our work was situated in the most beautiful of places on earth.
