  • Canadian Fabric: Le Grand Bal

Unique to the city, Le Grand Bal is an annual black-tie gala presented by the House of Forward Foundation (HOFF) that celebrates the three things: the launch of an annual Canadian cultural yearbook, Canadian Fabric; the people who influence our cultural identity; and philanthropy. Inspired by Canadian charm and fashion fantasy, the inaugural event on November 19th, 2013 was a huge success. It brought together 400 cultural enthusiasts and philanthropists, to truly embrace joie de vivre and to contribute to a noble Canadian cause. The 2013 beneficiary of Le Grand Bal was Oolagen Mental Health. The event also highlighted an iconic and historic event space that is dear to the cultural voice of both Toronto and Canada — the Royal Ontario Museum.

PALETTERA was asked to create a brand identity for the event, which was inspired by the joie de vivre of two amazing women and founding sponsors, Suzanne Rogers of Rogers Communications and Sylvia Mantella of Mantella Corporation. In shades of vibrant and nuanced pink, bold editorial typography, and with a flourished name mark, the stationery concepts came to life as a translation of the two iconic fashion-philanthropists. Beginning with opulent and substantial sponsorship decks, we designed a beautiful booklet-styled piece with a embellished cover that featured the event logo in deep silver presswork on a tasteful nude-pink pearlized stock. The silver grommets bound the pages together in a contemporary style. The booklet sat inside a chanel-inspired, hand-crafted cotton paper box, closed with a soft shell grey satin bow for a dramatic finishing touch.

We carried our designs through to the signage design, table numbers, and beautiful silver-pressed menus on the plates of every guest. The stationery details really added to the ambiance of the event, and complimented the grandeur of the Royal Ontario Museum’s main hall.

HOFF is a celebration of Canadian culture, leadership and philanthropy. Unique to its kind, the foundation uses arts and fashion as a vehicle to showcase Canada’s noteworthy people, trends and milestones that are relevant to each year. The term “forward” is evocative of HOFF’s underlying premise; to celebrate achievements that have pushed boundaries, to highlight people who have broken glass ceilings, and to promote leadership, innovation, and forward-thinking.

Through its two fundraising activities, an annually published magazine and gala event, HOFF will play an instrumental role in documenting the evolution of Canada’s cultural fabric, while simultaneously raising awareness for low-profile children’s charities. In 2013, the beneficiary was Oolagen Youth Mental Health.
