For the annual New Labels Competition by the Toronto Fashion Incubator, we created a sleek “swatch” style invitation, which featured 4 shades of white to black, printed on a fabric-inspired linen paper. They were then stitched together by black thread and sewing machine, with a blind debossed header piece. Placed into a posh hand-crafted silver and grey box, the package was completed with an oversized shellgrey satin bow. The invitation was very well-received and abuzz on social media; it gave distinguished guests (and long time supporters of the incubator) a refreshing look in contrast to the pink and floral design we created in 2012.

The Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Labels Gala was held at the Carlu on April 30, 2013. Presented by Target, the evening affair was vibrant and energetic, and fashion enthusiasts dressed in style to anoint the 22nd winner of the annual New Labels Competition.

Host Dina Pugliese of Breakfast Television wore a beautiful David Dixon black ballgown and kept an upbeat buzz as guests dined “along the runway.” The four finalists awaited their final runway show after their six months of hard work. From concept development and design to sewing, and receiving high-level mentorship, they had been hard at work to prepare their collections to present this evening. Once guests had finished eating the delicious meal, plates were cleared and the VIP tables that extended from the stage literally became the runway — a brilliant design!

Following the dynamic presentations by all four designers, Toronto designer Sarah Stevenson was declared the winner.  FLARE editor Miranda Purves and fellow judges designer David Dixon, TNT boutique owner Arie Assaraf and Target Divisional Merchandise Manager Elisha Ballantyne were the jury who made the final call. Sarah received The Suzanne Rogers Award for Best New Label includes a $25,000 cash prize, the opportunity to design a line to be sold in Target stores across the country and a full spread in the July issue of FLARE.

Distinguished guests included TFI Executive Director Susan Langdon, Target Senior Vice-President of Merchandise John Morioka, Suzanne Rogers, Host Dina Pugliese, Sylvia Mantella, Shauna Levy, Amoryn Engel, Society Editor for National Post and HELLO! Canada. Our president and art director, Raymond and Deborah were also in attendance and captured here by George Pimentel.
